THE men wear boubous throughout West Africa and in West African diasporic communities in Europe and the United States. Sewn from a single piece of fabric, the boubou generally has a width of 150 cm and a variable length. The most elegant style, the grand boubou, typically uses a piece of fabric 300 cm long and reaches to the ankles. Traditionally , the boubou is made to measure in tailors' workshops. To do this, fold the fabric in half, form an opening in the neck and sew the sides halfway up to obtain flowing sleeves. For women, the neck is wide and rounded; for men, it forms a long V, usually with a large five-sided pocket intersecting the point of the "V".
